What do you think about raising movie ratings because of smoking in the film?

Question by Marjery Stewart-Baxter: What do you think about raising movie ratings because of smoking in the film?
The US government is trying to pass a law that every movie that has smoking looking even a small bit cool has to have an rating of "R" to prevent children and teens to be tempted to smoke. Truthfully, i go both ways with the thing, i think some characters im movies are always associated by smoking, like a mobster with a cigar, or like Cruella Devill with her cigarrette holder in cartoons or children's movie. I don't really think Cruella is a role model for kids ans i don't think she will make them want to smoke. Then again, the cool heroes and spy guys that smoke, i feel, do make it look cool to smoke. Tell me what you think?

They should make it so smoking doesn't look cool. After they take a drag of their cigarrette they should start coughing and look sick. lol

  1. I don’t think it should be made rated R, I agree that it makes villains more evil and mobsters more conniving. It is up to parents to sway there children not to smoke not movie makers

  2. It is censorship and I dont like it at all

  3. honestly, i think that if you’re ‘too young’ to see smoking in a movie, you’re too young to think about smoking in the first place.
If you’re older (not old, but like old enough to think about smoking, like teenager), the idea of smoking will already be in your head, you don’t need a movie to show give you the idea.
I think raising the movie rating because of smoking is pointless

  4. Hello…why they feel the need to do that is crazy…there can’t be that many movies rated G, PG 13, Or even PG that there are people smoking anyway…but my opinion is that all movies are going to have something in them that offends some people. You’ll never satisfy some. I think if children are raised right by their parents and have enough sense to to know the difference between right and wrong then they will not allow a movie to influence them to smoke. Just my take on the matter.

  5. Will they pass a law that says any movie which shows or implies premarital sex or adultery as being cool should be rated “R” too, so that kids won’t be tempted to do that? Why pick on just one sin? The consequences of extramarital sex are very devastating as well, especially for kids, when they have to go through a divorce because mommy and daddy couldn’t behave themselves. I think they should leave the rating system alone. It’s good the way it is. People should definitely read reviews about movies that they are planning to see or go watch the movie first themselves, before they take their kids to see any movie so they can censor what they don’t want their kids to watch.

  6. A case could be made if smoking were a closeted issue, but children witness adults smoking all the time, every day of the week. So, should we also rate movies based on characters eating, because it might influence obesity? How about driving a car? That might send a message to smash up dad’s two-door. No. This is an attempt to legislate thought. Bad idea on all counts.
