www.janson.com The Havana: Cigar of Connoisseurs DVD Shot on location in the Cuban provinces Pinar de Rio and Havana, where socialistic workers need three to four years to produce a Havana, and in London, Madrid, and Berlin, where Havana afficionados whiff these expensive toys in forty-five minutes, this entertaining documentary takes a look at the history and tradition of the finest cigar in the world. Some of the more famous smokers of the Havana were Winston Churchill, Fidel Castro, Groucho Marx, and John F. Kennedy.

I know a high government official who is a Cuban exile. For those with connections, the best Cuban cigars are not a problem. He says the real problem is getting the good stuff in Cuba. The demand far outstrips supply.

Salinger spent much of his subsequent career and life in Paris, so he ultimately got to keep on enjoying his Havana habit.

According to another story from CA magazine (by one of JFK’s staffers, who supposedly wrote the embargo order for him), after the embargo Kennedy had an ongoing supply of Cuban cigars brought to him through the British ambassador. He also claimed a similar story about a “gift” of diplomatic cigars, this time from Che Guevara while at a conference in Rio. (JFK supposedly kept these.)
I got to try a Petit Upmann over the summer…wasn’t very impressed, it was a very lightweight cigar.

Too bad we don’t still have a few sharp deal-makers like this in Washington anymore. Unfortunately, it takes “sharks” like this to cut real deals for goods… like OIL! But with the press magnifying every word (from US diplomats) they can’t make the deals they used to, the deals (both right & wrong)that made the USA the #1 world economy for so many years. If the oil producers want to keep raising prices… we should do the same with our military providing their protection.
