If you are new to the cigar smoking world then there are a few basics that you will need to familiarize yourself with. One of those is learning how to pick out a good ashtray for your cigar. Now it might seem very self explanatory, but there are a few key tips that you do not want to over look.
Some of the first places that you want to start looking at for a new ashtray are of course your local cigar store. They should have a large selection for you to choose from and they will be able to answer any questions that you may have. If you are looking for something with a little more personality, then be sure to hit your local flea markets, swap meets or nearby antique stores. With today's technology you can easily find just about anything that your heart desires on the internet, so be sure to check out the world wide web.
There are four main materials that you want to choose from when deciding on an ashtray. There are crystal/glass, metal, wood and ceramic. None is better or worse when it comes to your actual smoking experience. They will only differ in the design, look and feel of the ashtray. Some factors that might help you decide which material to choose is where will it be kept? If you are looking for an ashtray for inside your house then you will want to find something that goes with the design of the room. If you are looking for something for outside then you will want something that is going to be durable and weather resident.
Next you want to consider the size. How many people will be using it at one time? If it is for social occasions with a group of friends, then you want to make sure that it is big enough to hold at least enough ash for two cigars for each person. This will keep from having to make periodic trips to the trash to empty it out and will make sure that the ash that has gathered in the tray does not effect any cigars that may be resting in the ashtray itself.
Next you want to look at the type of cigars that you generally smoke. You want to make sure that the ashtray will support the girth and length of the cigar.
That is about it, the rest all depends on what style and type you personally prefer.
A few tips to keep in mind when smoking your cigars are that a cigar that produces a lot of ash and burns extremely fast typically means that it was made of low quality tobacco. You want your cigar to burn slow and have a nice firm ash that will stay on your cigar for up to three inches. You should never force the ash off your cigar by tapping it. You should keep the ash on till it is ready to fall off by itself or by just barely touching it to the ashtray.
