Most cigars that are based out of Cuba have a brand the is produced elsewhere (Dominican Republic or Nicaragua). Cohibas are based out of Cuba (Castro loved to smoke them) , but in the states Cohibas are from the Dominican.

There are two Montecristo cigars, one made in Cuba produced by the state owned, Habanos company. And, the second producer, Altadis, which is made in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The latter is more than likely the one you see in stores, since the US still has trade embargo’s on Cuba.
